Duke Basketball First in Social Media Technology

For Duke University Men’s Basketball fans seeking an easy way to get insider basketball information from Twitter, the Duke Blue Planet TweetMixx Channel – http://www.dukeblueplanet.com/blue-devils-live.asp – was launched as a new way for fans to get streamlined access to aggregated news, conversations and links on the team from the true insiders – players, coaches and in-the-know fans.

Starting today, fans can simply go to www.dukeblueplanet.com and click on the Duke Blue Planet TweetMixx Channel to find the best content streaming in from Twitter, rather than having to conduct multiple Twitter searches for Duke basketball or team content.

“We wanted to give our former and current players, coaches and fans a voice that speaks to the hundreds of thousands of Duke basketball followers, and with the new Duke Blue Planet TweetMixx Channel we’re able to do that and much more,” said Mike Cragg, senior associate director of Duke Athletics. “And, we’re inviting fans to be part of that content. By applying to be part of the “Our Fans” section, we’re offering them the chance to have their relevant tweets broadcast on the Duke Blue Planet TweetMixx Channel, too.”

The Duke Blue Planet TweetMixx Channel features an “Insiders” tab that streams all of the latest updates from the current Blue Devils teammates, former players and coaches. By simply clicking the “retweet” or “reply” buttons that appear alongside each user’s tweet, viewers will be directed to that individual’s Twitter page to resend or reply to these updates.

As part of the Channel, Duke Blue Planet is also offering fans – whether or not they are associated with the University or team – to apply to have their Twitter feeds and relevant tweets broadcast on the Duke Blue Planet TweetMixx Channel by simply sending in the their twitter IDs.  The “Our Fans” tab is comprised of a roster of fans, whose tweets are filtered to the stream so only tweets and links that apply to Duke and basketball appear.

More features of the Duke TweetMixx Channel include:

  • a “Links” tab that displays the most up-to-date hyperlinks containing matches to the list of search terms about the team and basketball;
  • unwrapped, abbreviated links offered in a side-pane view of text video and photos, avoiding the need to navigate away from the main page; and
  • a widget to share and link the Duke Blue Planet TweetMixx Channel page to external Web sites, other social media sites, such as Facebook, MySpace, blogs and more.

“Through the Duke Blue Planet TweetMixx Channel, fans get access not only to what’s going on with Duke basketball, but they can also keep tabs on current and former players, all in one central location,” said Chris McGill, CEO and founder of Mixx. “Plus, we’re offering some of the greatest experts on the game – the fans – the chance to tweet alongside the players. Altogether, these layers make for an exciting way to get instantaneous, interactive information and improve the game-following experience, before, during and after the season.”

Duke continues its academic and athletic leadership tradition in being the first college basketball program to embrace such a forward-thinking technology like the TweetMixx platform – enabling the team and fans to interact in new ways.
